da apostebet: Glasgow Rangers are still looking for a player who can step up to be their long-term consistent number nine in the way that Alfredo Morelos once was at Ibrox.

da gbg bet: The Colombia international scored 124 goals in 269 appearances in all competitions for the Light Blues, per Transfermarkt, during his time at the club, before his exit on a free transfer in the summer of 2023.

He provided a consistent source of goals for the Scottish Premiership giants as their main number nine, and was, of course, the first-choice striker when Steven Gerrard guided the team to the league title in the 2020/21 campaign.

Rangers have not won the league since Morelos moved on from the club almost three years ago, but they could inch closer to doing so by finally finding that reliable centre-forward in the transfer window.

Rangers open talks to sign Premiership forward

The Light Blues are reportedly looking at possibly bringing in a new attacker who could be their best number nine since the Colombian marksman.

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

According to TEAMtalk, Glasgow Rangers are interested in a deal to sign Motherwell centre-forward Tawanda Maswanhise in the January transfer window.

The report claims that the Scottish giants have already made contact with his representatives to open talks on the player’s side to gauge his interest in a move to Ibrox.

It adds that there are also teams from the English Championship keeping tabs on the Premiership star’s progress, which means that there could be competition for his signature.

TEAMtalk does not reveal how much money Motherwell would need to be offered to be tempted into cashing in on their star forward, but it does reveal that Rangers do have the money to make it difficult for their league rivals to turn down a significant offer.

Why Maswanhise would be Rangers' best striker since Morelos

After Morelos left Ibrox in 2023, Cyriel Dessers was signed from Cremonese and became the number one option up front for the subsequent two seasons.

The Nigeria international scored 34 goals in two Premiership seasons for Rangers, which is an impressive return at face value, but he missed a staggering 47 ‘big chances’ on his way to those 34 goals, per Sofascore.

Dessers was unreliable in the big moments because he was too prone to missing huge opportunities in front of goal, which may be why they decided to move him on last summer to bring in Youssef Chermiti and Bojan Miovski.

Unfortunately, though, Chermiti has only scored four goals and Miovski has only scored three goals in the Premiership this season, illustrating Danny Rohl’s need for a reliable number nine.

This means that Rangers have lacked a striker who has been prolific and clinical in the two and a half seasons since Morelos left Ibrox on a free transfer, but the signing of Maswanhise would change that.

The 23-year-old, who can play out wide or through the middle as a number nine, scored his 15th goal of the season in all competitions against Ross County in the SFA Cup last time out, which shows that he can find the back of the net on a regular basis.

Maswanhise, who was described as being “on fire” by analyst Kai Watson, also has the finishing quality to arrive at Ibrox as the forward they have been desperately lacking in recent seasons.

The most impressive part of that is that he produced 14.27 xG on target from 9.48 xG worth of chances, which essentially means that the quality of his shots consistently elevated the xG value of the chances he had.

That is the sign of a supremely talented finisher, which is backed up by his goal return, and that is something Rangers have not had since Morelos moved on.

With the Gers chasing their first league title since the 2020/21 campaign, signing a proven Premiership striker who has shown immense finishing quality to bolster their squad for the run-in could be an incredible piece of business by the club.

Maswanhise has the goalscoring pedigree and finishing quality to be a reliable and prolific number nine for Rangers, in a way that Dessers, Miovski, and Chermiti have all failed to be, if they can get a deal over the line with Motherwell.

It is now down to the board to put enough money on the table to convince their Premiership rivals to part ways with the prolific 23-year-old marksman.
